Rebuilding a Career

Hand picking up block and adding to stack

I’ve spent my career in financial services architecting and leading the development of platforms that power critical services in areas of asset management, risk management, and insurance quoting. Most of this time was spent in Boston where there is a broad community of financial services providers. However, these days I find myself in Seattle and my career experiences are not as immediately translatable to the world of big tech as I thought they could be.

So, it’s time for a transformation of my own career. I’ve had the opportunity to completely redefine who I was as a professional three other times. And while this transformation is not quite a complete redefinition, there are a new set of standards to which I need to rise.

Public presence

Part of this new transformation includes building a public presence. I’ve historically been private person, never really posting to Twitter (i.e. X), Instagram, or the like. But what I’m (finally) realizing is that having a more defined public presence is akin to building a network of trust. Beyond your follower count, it gives a deeper understanding of an individual’s capabilities as well as a deeper anchoring into who they are.

This site is the beginnings of my public presence. A presence that will include other mediums such as Twitter (i.e. X), LinkedIn, and other software specific mediums like CodeSandbox. It would be great to eventually get into YouTubing as a personal challenge to go beyond my comfort zone, but for now we’ll keep it to text based mediums.

Topics covered

I chose the site name of Salingerian as an homage to my high-school nickname Salinger, as in the author J.D. Salinger. (More on Salinger in a future post.) This transformation comes at a time when there are several new paths I need to follow in life as a father, husband, and professional. Therefore, I will be covering a broad range of topics beyond the typical developer stack, including:

  • Raising a strong family as a father
  • Being a great partner
  • Having a life outside of work
